Myth : Back pain “NORMAL”

Any kind of pain experienced by body is not normal. In fact 1/2 to 1/3 of us are likely to experience back ache at some point in life. So back pain is not NORMAL but it is very COMMON.

Myth : I am absolutely alright once the pain disappears

Most of the time it is episodic. Pain lasts a few days and then disappear completely only to reappear after some time. In fact there is more than 50% chance of reoccurrence. It is important to follow precautions and EXERCISES meticulously to avoid recurrences.

Myth: Bed Rest is absolutely necessary for healing

Excessive bed rest is in fact detrimental for recovery. Bed rest is helpful, but for no more than three days with intermittent stretching throughout the day.

Myth: I must get an X-ray or MRI done for correct diagnosis

Physical damage to structure of spine is not always a reason for one to experience it. Poor postures and poor control of muscle can give rise to pain which can’t be diagnosed on X-ray or MRI. In fact, the problem with having a MRI is that it most likely will always show something even in a normal person without it. Hence MRI, in spite of being very sensitive is not very specific.

Myth : I must wear BELT

Wearing belt can actually alter ones posture and make muscle weak hampering long term recovery. So unless recommended, one should avoid wearing belt by self.

Myth : Its normal to have back pain in old age

You can age and still not have back pain. If you exercise regularly and are particular about your diet & CalciumNitamin D supplementation, you can easily enjoy a free lifestyle even in your old age.

Myth: If I have a slipped disc, I must have surgery

Not all Slipped disc need surgery. In fact, only a small percentage of people (<2%) may need surgery, specially those having radiation down their legs. So. DON’T WORRY, just because your MRI report shows PIVD. it does not mean that your doctor will recommend you surgery. To conclude, it is important to change one’s perspective toward back and neck pain. Being active, maintaining correct posture and doing right exercises are more effective ways of having healthy spine.
